Presidential Palace (Delhi, India)

Rashtrapati Bhavan is the official seat of the President of India and is believed to be the biggest presidential palace in the world with 340 rooms. It is so large that the first resident, the British Viceroy Lord Irwin kept getting lost. Rashtrapati Bhavan is located at the western end of Rajpath, the ceremonial road that joins the Presidential Palace and the Secretariat to the India Gate. The palace was designed by Edwin Lutyens, the architect responsible for much of New Delhi’s grand buildings. When the British took the decision to move the Indian capital from Calcutta to Delhi, Lutyens was given responsibility for the design of the new city. Sadly for tourists, the palace is not open to the public except by prior appointment with the President or the Deputy Military Secretary but visitors are free to point their cameras through the grand gates and take photographs. Changing of the guard takes place on Saturday mornings.
