Taj Mahal (Agra, India)

When his favourite wife Mumtaz Mahal died giving birth to his fourteenth child in 1631, the Moghal Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the building of the Taj Mahal as her mausoleum thus creating one of the most famous of the world’s symbols of enduring love and almost bankrupting his empire in the process. The Taj Mahal is a large white marble building heavily inlaid with semi-precious stones and standing beside the river Yamuna. It is built in Persian garden-tomb style with reflecting pools of water and symmetrical garden layout. In addition to the famous white building, visitors will also find a complex of other Moghal buildings including a mosque and the great gateway through which they enter. The main Taj Mahal building contains the tombs of both Mumtaz and Shah Jahan. The most popular times to visit are sunrise and sunset and considerably higher entrance fees apply at these times. The Taj Mahal is inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites.
