Howrah Bridge in Kolkata (Calcutta) is one of the city’s landmarks and joins the twin cities of Kolkata and Howrah which lay on either bank of the Hooghly River. In 1965 the bridge was renamed as Rabindra Setu (named after the Bengali poet and Nobel Prize winning writer, Rabindranath Tagore) but is still widely referred to as Howrah Bridge. The original Howrah Bridge was a floating pontoon bridge constructed by Sir Bradford Leslie in 1874 and was the main Hooghly River crossing for nearly 70 years. The current Howrah Bridge is a cantilever bridge whose construction started in 1937 and opened in 1943. It has a single span of 450 m and has a total length of 705 m and is 30 m wide.
