Mecca Masjid Mosque (Hyderabad, India)
The Mecca Masjid is one of the oldest mosques in Hyderabad and is said to be the third largest in the whole of India. Building work was started in 1617 under the orders of Mohammad Quli Qutub Shah and completed 77 years later by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. It is constructed of local granite and the main hall is large enough to hold 10 000 worshippers with a large open courtyard outside to hold many thousands more. It is called the Mecca Masjid because it is believed that a small number of bricks from the Holy City of Mecca were used in the construction. The Masjid is located close to the Charminar in the Old City of Hyderabad. In addition to the main mosque building, the site holds the tombs of many of the Nizams who ruled Hyderabad and of their close relatives.
